The RPK was created to replace the RPD light machine gun. Based on the AKM, the RPK has a heavier and longer barrel. This results in a longer range and bigger muzzle velocity than other AK automatic rifles. The new muzzle brake can be fitted to reduce recoil and improve accuracy.
